As the school year comes to an end, many supply teachers and support staff will be looking forward to some well-earned down-time during the summer break.
Supply work is rewarding, but requires adaptability, resilience and an ability to build relationships quickly. Whether covering a single day, a short-term absence or a longer placement, supply staff step into unfamiliar environments and are expected to make an immediate impact. Whilst the flexibility temporary work offers has its benefits, it can also be mentally and emotionally demanding.
Prioritising your wellbeing
The summer holidays provide an opportunity to focus on physical and mental wellbeing. Whether you’re spending time with family and friends, pursuing hobbies, travelling, exercising, or simply enjoying slowing down, these experiences help restore energy and resilience, so you’ll be ready to hit the ground running again in September.
Taking time to rest should never be viewed as unproductive. In a profession that demands flexibility and emotional energy, recovery is a vital part of maintaining long-term effectiveness and job satisfaction.
We’re passionate about prioritising the wellbeing of our supply staff and have hosted a fantastic training session with accredited psychotherapist (and supply teacher) James Williamson to take a deep-dive into the importance of looking after your mental health on supply.

Reflecting on your acheivements
Supply staff often move quickly from one assignment to the next, leaving little opportunity to reflect on the difference they make. The summer break provides a chance to recognise your achievements, reflect on challenges you’ve faced and start planning for the year ahead.
If any of our staff haven’t already secured work for September, the holidays are a great chance to really think about career goals and have an honest conversation with their agency about their preferences.
Preparing for the year ahead
While rest should remain the priority, summer is a great opportuniy for professional development. Many supply teachers use the break to update training, explore new educational approaches or refresh subject knowledge.
We’ve got several online CPD sessions available for free for all our supply staff and always welcome feedback about what training or development they’d like us to facilitate.
Building confidence for September
One of the uncertainties supply teachers often face is not knowing what opportunities September will bring. Whilst we try and secure the majority of our teachers and support staff roles before the end of the school year, we’re open throughout the holidays and always get last-minute vacancies we need to fill during the summer break.
Recognising the value of rest
The contribution of supply staff to our schools is immense. They provide continuity during staff absences and bring a wealth of experience gained across different educational settings.
As the academic year ends, supply staff deserve the opportunity to rest without guilt. Downtime is not a sign of inactivity, it is a necessary period of recovery that supports wellbeing, professional effectiveness and long-term career satisfaction.
The summer holidays offer a chance to recharge, reconnect with life beyond the classroom and prepare for the opportunities ahead. For supply teachers, that time is not merely beneficial, it’s essential.
