Supply staff play a huge role in keeping schools running smoothly, but there are still plenty of misconceptions about what the job is really like. Whether you’re considering temporary work with agency or are already ‘on supply’, understanding the reality behind these myths can help you approach the role with confidence.

Here are some of the most common myths and the truth behind them:

Myth 1: “Supply staff don’t do any real teaching”

One of the biggest misconceptions is that supply teachers and teaching assistants are just there to ‘keep an eye on the class’. The reality is that supply staff often step straight into busy teaching and support roles with little notice and opportunity to plan.

Regardless of whether you’re on supply or a permanent member of staff, you’ll often still be expected to manage behaviour and adapt lessons for a variety of abilities (including SEND support) all while keeping learning on track.

Myth 2: “Supply work is easier than a permanent role”

While supply work offers flexibility and reduces the need to plan or prepare lessons, it still has it’s difficulties. On supply, you’re expected to adapt to new schools and policies, whilst building rapport with students and permanent staff quickly.

Walking into an unfamiliar classroom and establishing control quickly requires strong classroom management and confidence. Many experienced teachers say supply work is more demanding in the moment, even if it doesn’t carry long-term responsibilities.

Myth 3: “There’s no career progression in supply work”

Whilst usually temporary, supply work can lead to permanent opportunities. Many schools use supply staff as a way to trial potential permanent hires.

It also helps you gain experience across different settings, which can strengthen your CV and help you understand the type of setting and age ranges that suit you best.

Myth 4: “Students don’t respect supply staff”

While it’s true that pupils may test boundaries with someone new, respect is usually built quickly with clear expectations and consistency. If you have a calm, fair approach and follow the behaviour policy, students usually respond well.

And if they don’t? You have the flexibility to let us know it’s not the right environment for you and we’ll look for alternative placements.

Myth 5: “Supply work is unreliable and inconsistent”

We pride ourselves on our ability to find reliable, regular work for all our supply staff. Almost 95% of the teachers and support staff that choose to register with us are offered suitable work as soon as they’re cleared by our Safeguarding team.

Myth 6: “You won’t develop professionally”

Because supply staff aren’t always included in formal CPD, people assume development stops. But supply work can actually accelerate learning.

As well as getting access to a range of settings and situations, you’ll also be given access to our free online and face-to-face CPD sessions, covering a wide range of topics, including Child Protection, Mental Health and Wellbeing, Phonics, Autism Awareness and Team Teach.

Myth 7: “Supply work is only for struggling educators”

This myth couldn’t be further from the truth. Many teachers and teaching assistants choose supply work intentionally.

Reasons include:

  • Better work-life balance
  • Flexible scheduling
  • Variety in day-to-day work
  • Less long-term pressure

Some experienced professionals move into supply after years in permanent roles because it allows them to stay in education while protecting their wellbeing, while others are new to the sector and use supply as a way to gain experience in a range of different schools before settling into a permanent job.

Whether you choose supply for flexibility, experience, or long-term career goals, it’s a path that deserves credit. If you think temporary work in schools could be the right move for you – we’d love to hear from you.
